Back from my 4th GDCEu / Gamescom

I was lucky enough to have been chosen as a Conference Associate for GDC Eu for the 4th time, and spent the first week of August in Cologne, staying with my brother who is studying medicine in the university rather than at a hostel.
Escaped extremely hot weather in Israel. Not that Germany was exactly cool.

It was a pleasure seeing my once-a-year game development geek friends, and to make a few new ones I'll hope to see in the future. Alex, my super confident Greek friend, couldn't make it this year, but I've applied some of the things he taught me, and walked myself right into a few press presentations.
Was expecting a good Gamescom, but got a lot of exclusive videos rather than hands on gameplay. Good year for shirts my size, a few other choice pieces of swag.
Showed my portfolio around, including a great review from some creatives working at Motiga, Handed out some business cards, and followed up in the week since.
I probably could have done more of that, as always, Not sure if my dreams of breaking into the game industry will be realized this year, but it doesn't feel like it.

I was lucky enough to find a position as an archviz artist at a studio within walking distance, practically the only one in my hometown. Wasn't lucky enough to keep the position, with gaming on my mobile device being one of the reasons I was laid off. I really need to find a job at a game studio where playing isn't just tolerated - it is encouraged.
Even though I knew it might not last, it was still frustrating to be let go, especially now that I'm sitting at home wondering what my next move ought to be.

Gonna shut my trap and give you some speed paints to look at.
I'd show the work I did at the archviz studio, but my boss thought otherwise.

The Update You Have All Been Waiting For

My flight to Dusseldorf leaves 6 am next Friday. I hope rocket fire from Gaza doesn't affect that.
I'll be going through Kiev, in both direction, hopefully the strife in that area doesn't affect me. Get what you paid for I guess?
From DUS I'll be taking the train to Cologne for my 3rd year as volunteer at GDC Europe. It's going to be great.
I also have my flight to Japan and South Korea in September all figured out as well. Maybe I'll get lucky enough to finally break into the game industry during my trip. Otherwise freelance will probably be my last option.

Printed out my portfolio; updated my website, taking into account some constructive critique I received; and noticed that I printed a slightly outdated file so I may go back and reprint it, if I feel it necessary and time allows.

Here's the final Silverhawks work:

Abandoned the Chroma Witch project after building it in vector

Somehow found the time to do a virtual plein air of a village in Croatia

And pumped out speed paints on a daily basis, off course. For some I have been using colors found on a "palette meme" on Tumblr. :)

I need to get back to art

GDC Europe and Gamescom did not disappoint. Met friends from last year, made a few new ones. Showed my portfolio around, exchanged business cards, expanded my Linkedin network and came home with plenty of swag.

Already planning on how next year will be better. I need a bigger bag for all the freebies, might try to contact people ahead and see if I can score more free stuff - the kind that goes to the media and business guys. My feet will and back will be sore, but there isn't much I can do there.

It's been super busy at work since I returned. Only 2 operators to cover 2 shifts per day, people on vacation because of the holiday, a secretary that was so fed up with the way she was treated she quit and with new stores coming in with teething problems, I haven't had time to do more than the daily speed paints.
Hope the new operator is integrated quickly and I'll have some time to work on my own projects.
I may even take the advice I was given and try to freelance, or do some pro bono illustration... We'll see.

The sensor ship didn't quite make it into the portfolio. I mainly blame the extreme perspective. At least I got a nice background out of it.

Enough chatter, time for the speed paint update:
