Temple by Moonlight

Brought my final floating temple illustration far enough that I'm happy with it (almost, watching it on a different screen has brought a problem to the surface which I'll get rid of before this I post this.)
I was hoping to use the rest of the week to polish off the sensor ship image, but it just isn't working. I suspect the extreme perspective.

Yesterday I was informed they now want me to pull a shift everyday, which leaves me with precious little time to work on my portfolio. It's going to be crunch time to pull it all together, print it out and rework my website (I believe this is the 4th time, though this will be more functional than cosmetic.)

Also planned to design custom tuckboxes for my copy of Race for the Galaxy, to which ended I painted these 3 spaceships. After doing the green one I feel I can do better with blue, so that might be out, and I also need a yellow ship to match all player colors. I'll also need to work on the background to pull it all together and some typography. Don't know how I'll get around to it now.

Before this mess at work was finalized I found time to do something silly, with a study of the Pharaoh of the Fish

I'll stop with the daily speed paints when I'm in Cologne for GDC Europe and Gamescom, but here are my faves since I last posted.

Scapanus latimanus

Finally finished my illustration of the Broad-footed Mole's Skeleton. It was a lot of work, and feels great to finish, though I lost things when inking.
Choleric is still being tweaked, and I did something inspired by the cons I have been enjoying for several years now, but I'm waiting for a response from my unaware model. If she likes it, I'll keep you updated.

ANSC Trade Counter 3rd revision

This is the third revision of the Austin Nature & Science Center Trade Counter brochure, which I took far too long to complete. Too easy to get sidetracked when working from home as a volunteer graphic designer.

Austin bird sketches

A few cartoon birds, all Austin area natives (I hope :D ) Preliminary sketches for a 3D model I plan to do for Austin Parks & Recreation, to be featured in their publication. I hope I finish it before I leave to Berkeley, CA, as I'm working on their computer. It'll be great to have more published work in my portfolio, and showcase more of my 3D skills. I'll keep you posted.

Cat Knight

This is my entry for the "anonymous" Art order challenge. Asked to take a character sketch and try to adapt it to a certain style, samples of which were provided. Original post:Trying Something Out of The Ordinary

Côte d’Ivoire?

Just had a look at the stats of my blog. Why is my biggest audience from the ivory coast? Why is the Ukraine in second place?

Another week, another dump. More finals coming in. Half the semester flew right past me without me noticing, doing ok grade wise, just gotta keep the momentum.
I'm so happy I took leadership of Sketch Group, we are expanding little by little, but still a tight group.

And now to the work.
Childrens' market illustration, character development sketches.

Cricket magazine cover:

Professional practice. We all drew random professions to illustrate.
Landscape painting at the Whetstone Park of Roses and Highbanks Metro park.

Free model session, Jeremy in Sanguine and Black conté and sharpie.

Acronym Soup

Summer break is officially here. Now that I'm a week in, it's begun to sunk.
There's still the big "if" of the internship at Neopets or elsewhere.
I'm still doing art - DSGs, INTJfs, GCC.

I have been part of Daily Sketch Group for six years now, and 1060 posts later, I'm still doing every single one (though they are no longer daily.)
It has helped me a lot, but looking at the other art posted in the forum, I still have a lot of room for improvement.

Here are some from the past week:

DSG 1559: Creature • IMPRESSIVE ALIEN BEAST BLENDS QUALITIES OF BOTH RHINO & LION

DSG 1558: Sci-Fi • FRIENDS ON GROUND WAVE AS FUTURISTIC FLYING CRAFT KICKS UP DUST

DSG 1557: Fantasy Scene • PRAIRIE GIRL USES STICK TO POKE AT THE THING IN THE PIT

I have also doing the art challenges at the INTJforum. (Do I even do anything for myself anymore?)
Some of the latest work.

Eyes.

Creature from Mount Bosavi: The world's biggest rat (This was my suggestion)

Dogma

Last but not least, we are working on our own game project at the Game Creation Club, for which I am making some of the in-game art.

Engineer, picks up weapons and adds skill points to player.

Carrion worms, eats up bodies and spits out flies.

Heavy infantry (based on another GCC member's concept art) one of the basic units.

Two working weeks left. Why am I blogging

It's because there are two weeks left. When it goes down to one, that's when the all nighters come and beating myself over the head over how I should have been working. Or maybe it will be better this semester? Last Spring was alright. It might be a cycle I'm developing.

Inkwash from figure drawing class, after the first session, and the final.

The Keakeumm, an alien species I have developed for Electronic illustration. Still some work needed on it. There's another alien in the works, which I should address in the next few days.

And some Bunn guns for advanced structural. These fire magnetically accelerated nano-ammunition, custom built inside the rifle from atmospheric gasses.
These are connected to the other alien race of my game idea for Electronic illustration :)

Oh, Mrs. Wong

Why must we argue? You think I am the one with the attitude because I don't think the identity of the man matters?
Some of the best motivation I ever had. I'm determined to make this a good piece. If she gives me an F on an A+ piece, I have ways of contesting that. Not so much if I get a C- on a B work.

In other news we are done with the BlackFire project for advanced structural, and are now moving on to personal projects. I'm going to go with alien guns, connecting it with my electronic illustration work.

We are working on coreshadows in figure drawing.

Finally, something from electronic illustration that has been forgotten for a while. Graphite sketch colored in Painter.

Student assessments this week.

I'm up on Wednesday at 12:30 pm. I hope I'll pass this time.

I'm not sure what I did this past year was really that different from what I did back then.
I'd like to believe I improved over that time period, but am I focused?
I just feel that school is the time to experiment with techniques and approaches,
I know what I want to do after I graduate, and if it goes according to plan, I'll be doing it for years to come.

Tried the technique Tardino taught at the post earlier this year, I think it came out decent.
Maybe I should have used more fixative. Mr. Kumlien, my figure drawing teacher, thought it was getting muddy, and wanted to see what I could do with straight pastel. So I did a quick portrait.

Razzle Dazzle 'em

Simultaneous contrast, a color concept project that fell victim to the snow day. My favorite for this class (which includes the fall semester) so far, by far.

We were asked to look at an art movement for inspiration. I choose Futurism (and Vorticism) for mine, because like a typical male, I like war machines :)
I had some reference photos I took over the summer which were appropriate.
We also needed to have a mid-value mid-chroma color flowing throughout the piece, and I thought it would be a good idea to make it the green of the camouflage.

When I researched this project I learned that the dazzle pattern I saw painted on WWI ships was actually created by a Vorticist, how cool is that?

Another victim of the snow was the styles and concepts portrait project. Our good friend Ahmedinejad.
Oil pastel. Hands bother me a little, but I think it's pretty good overall.

The anonymous model on Wednesday (maybe I should ask for her name?)
Dayna on Friday. Both conté.
Next week we're starting 2 week poses. It's not easy to slowing down, or finding what to noodle with for that long.
